Happy New Year from Nihongo Picnic 🎍
To celebrate the new year, we’ve decided to offer a free, open pilot class to experience what comes after advanced Japanese.
When your Japanese reaches an advanced or even near-native level, people around you often say, “Your Japanese is so good!”
You can hold conversations smoothly.
You rarely struggle to express yourself.
And yet, you can’t shake off that feeling of hesitation.
“Did what I said really come across the way I intended?”
“Was I speaking in a way that fit this person, this moment?”
Even when no one corrects you anymore, these questions can linger.
When “correct” Japanese no longer feels enough
When you reach an advanced level, corrections become rare, not because your Japanese is perfect, but because nothing is obviously wrong. At the same time, many learners begin to want something more than correctness:
more natural expressions
a sense closer to how native speakers actually think and speak
language that feels right for the situation and the listener
What does “High-Advanced (超級)” Japanese really mean?
When you hear the word 超級 high-advanced level, you probably picture:
complex grammar
sophisticated vocabulary
flawless, academic Japanese
But that is not the whole picture.
High-advanced Japanese is much more than linguistic mastery. It’s being able to:
intentionally use simple expressions
leave space instead of saying everything directly
adjust how you speak based on the person and the situation
These are the skills that matter most at this level.
Learning to adjust Japanese for the listener and the moment
With this in mind, the Nihongo Picnic High-Advanced Class intentionally explores topics such as:
expressions that are grammatically correct but sound unexpectedly heavy
explanations that are logically sound but still difficult for the listener to follow
Rather than simply adding more information, we practice thinking about:
how much to say
what can be left unsaid
how to say the same thing but differently
Our focus shifts from how well we speak to how well our words are received.
This can make a big difference in many situations:
meetings and presentations at work
casual chats with friends
important or sensitive conversations
